To learn ‘Use of Let in English Grammar’ is very important. It helps us to speak fluently.
Let – करने देना (karne dena)
Let(transitive verb)-to permit/allow someone to do something
[Allow is more formal than let but less formal than permit]
( इन वाक्यों में sub. खुद किसी काम को नहीं करता; बल्कि दूसरों को करने देता है।)
Basic Structure- Let+ object (living beings)+bare infinitive(verb1)
or
Let+ him/her/me/them+v1+other words
Three forms of let- let let let
Let is used in many ways in English grammar. Let’s see the use of Let one by one.
Note-(It is not used in passive sentences)
Use of Let in imperative sentences (for suggestion ,order and request)
Let me study.
Let me teach the children.
Let me find out who they are.
Let them think whatever they want to think.
Let him be happy in his own world.
Let the water boil.
Let her live her life.
Let him understand the situation first.
Negative Sentences-Negative sentences can be formed in two ways.
- Don’t- at the beginning
- Not- after let+object
Don’t let him study./ Let him not study.
Don’t let him come inside./ Let him not come inside.
Don’t let her teach the children./ Let her not teach the children.
Don’t let me find out the answers./ Let me not find out the answers.
Don’t let him pluck the twig.
Don’t let me down.
Let’s- It is a contraction of ‘Let us’.
It is to make suggestions about doing something. When we work together or do something with someone, we use let’s instead of let.
Structure-Let’s +v1+other words
Examples: Let’s help them.
Let’s see, what happens tomorrow.
Let’s split the bill.
Let’s call it a day.
Let’s hope for the best.
Let’s give him an+other chance.
Let’s have some fun.
Let’s go to the restaurant.
Let’s not talk about it.
Let’s not go to him.
Let’s not go on a picnic.
Let’s not go on holiday in July, it will be too hot.
LEMME
‘Lemme’ is a contraction for ‘let me’. It is used in informal conversations.
Structure-Lemme+v1+ other words
Lemme do it.
Lemme think over it.
Lemme see if I can do anything in this matter.
Lemme know whether you are going or not.
Lemme sleep for a while.
Lemme charge my phone first.
He didn’t lemme see it.

Sometimes, object is not mentioned. In that case, we use v1 after let.
e.g. I let study. I let write. I let go.

Papa will not let you go.
I will never let you go away from me.

You must let him study.(tumhe use jarur padne dena chahiye)

You have to let him speak. ( aap ko use bolne dena hai)
You had to let him speak.(aap ko use bolne dena tha)
You will have to let him speak.( aap ko use bolne dena hoga)
You used to let him speak. ( aap use bolne diya karte the)

Use of Let as a gerund in English Grammar
Letting that child play here is not good.
(us bache ko yaha khelne dena thik nahi hai)
Letting that girl shoot a video over there is not good.
(us ladki ko waha per video shoot karne dena thik nahi hai)
Letting him get beaten is timidness for you.
(use pitaai khane dena tumhare liye kayarta hai)
Letting him starve is very bad.
( use bhukho marne dena bahut bura hai)
TO LET-to let someone take on rent (kiraye ke liye khali hai)
